Bill of Rights

In Aziz Gazipura’s book Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty…and Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, and Unapologetically Being Yourself, one of the exercises he recommends is writing one’s own personal bill of rights. It’s an empowering thing to do, especially for someone (like me) who was conditioned and trained to always put others first.

I present mine here as an example for those who might wish to write their own:

BILL OF RIGHTS

As a being human-divine, I, Terrill Schrock, hereby claim the following rights:

The right to exist and enhance my existence.

The right to be sovereign over all that I am and will be.

The right to enter and exit relationships.

The right to give and receive Love as I wish.

The right to pursue contact and connection with others.

The right to seek health, wealth, and wholeness.

The right to pursue pleasure, joy, satisfaction, and fulfillment.

The right to grow and evolve as much as possible in my lifetime.

The right to say YES or NO without explanation.

The right to feel what I feel and think what I think.

The right to communicate my thoughts and feelings (or not).

The right to act in the world.

The right to attempt, fail, and try again.

The right to do as meaningful (to me) work as possible.

The right to acquire information and increase my knowledge.
